I'm off to Fairford at the weekend with my son and a couple of his
friends. I'm thinking of driving to one of the car parks, rather than
use the park and ride (which we've done on the last couple of trips). I
gather the traffic management has been improved, but I'm sure there
will still be lots of congestion. We'll be driving up from the M4 at
Swindon.

Would be grateful for any advice re. how early we need to arrive to
avoid the worst of it. If you don't want to tell everyone, pse email
me via sijambo at gmail.com

Many thanks for any help with this.

Arriving is not normally the problem - it's leaving.

In previous years I've tended to aim for arrival by 9am latest, and normally
sail into the car park without congestion. Last year it took over 1 and a
half hours to get out of the same car park... This year I plan to hang
around for 2 hours after the display ends - perhaps watch the concert -
before attempting to exit.

I went a few years ago and took nearly 2 hours to get there from here (25
miles away). Last year only took about 40 mins, including queuing to get
in. I'd drive and park there - traffic management is much improved.

OK - many thanks chaps. Perhaps the bus is worth it after all -
certainly don't want to queue for 1.5 hours to get out! If you're
going this year hope you have a great time. We've seen a few aircraft
obviously on their way to the show pass over us in sunny Newbury over
the last couple of days.

Is that the bus from Swindon? I think it takes 40 mins - I wonder if it gets
priority on the roads over cars? I'd use it myself too, but I'd have to go
past Fairford to get to Swindon, only to come back on myself!

I think what Fairford suffers from is being away from main roads - getting
out seems to be a bit trickier than other airshows I have been to over the
years.

Have a great day!

Yes - although I can't find details of a general park and ride on the
RIAT site this year. There's one from the railway station, but there
used to be another from a site on the outskirts of Swindon. It
uses/used roads which were closed off to general traffic.

You have a great day too.
